The Morrowind Saga

So, you may recall I’ve been whiny forever because I could only get Morrowind to run on my POS for gaming laptop.  Grind-o-rama city on that thing.  Pixelated death!

Enter my spouse, The PC Guy.  He is a Network person and doesn’t care to be identified as a PC Guy, but I tell you the guy can do anything.  He doesn’t see his own glory and might. Honestly.

An older pc has been rattling around his PC area, he thinks it was my son’s before he moved up to a gaming pc.

OMG it has loads of space and Windows XP, that gaming friendly operating system.  It works like a charm!  I’ve suffered for nothing.  I got a couple of cheapo speakers (and the guy at the store spoke to me very slowly about how to plug it into the back of the pc….zzzzzz).  Come on. I used to do all that stuff no problems.  However ever since my spouse has become a PC God, why should I fill the empty spaces of my head with that crud?  I did set it up, but you know, if I had trouble I could squeal for help and Prince PC Charming would rescue me.  (He reads this and I now have a free pass to ask him tech questions for awhile, yay me.)

I decided to go all warrior and made a Redguard and I’m ready to float endlessly through Tamriel.

Oblivion: Should I kill her off?

My Mage is getting pounded terribly at level 7.  I think I need to back up and not buy my house (though I was up till 2 in the morning one night getting the money) and use the money on spells.

Or, back her way up and re-do her as a better Mage now that I see how to play her, or be a weasly goof and make a warrior as I always do and just slice those stinker marauders with the tip of my Claymore.

I also had about five tries in a row to get a good session (presaged by the playing of the opening music) and nada, so I am discouraged.

This made me want to play Morrowind but I really really want to play it on my gaming pc not my POS laptop.  I can get rid of the Font =0 message by installing in C Program Files rather than C Program Files (x86) but the music error will not go away. I can play the files as Mp3s no problemo in the Bethesda Data Files folder but as the game comes up it’s a no go.

So…Skyrim.  I think I should re-roll her for sure.  I pulled her out of the Temple she was in and sent her down the mountain to regroup.  There was a terrific snowstorm all the way down with a couple of wolf attacks. No problem killing the wolves.

But I’m walking through this field at the bottom and there are three other people casually walking along too, and I’m thinking they’re farmers or townspeople walking around the place at 2 am (game time) when oops they’re bandits and I’m dead pretty quick.  I will definitely start her over.

Elder Scrolls

Ever since trying out the Elder Scrolls online in their open beta I have been thinking of returning to the real Elder scrolls worlds, those rich stories, those incredible environments.

Morrowind

I have Windows 7 and apparently my Game of the Year Edition of Morrowind despises Windows 7 or vice versa.  I read a variety of trouble shooting tips, none of which worked.  I got a music error and a font error that just froze the screen.  😦   

In desperation to play I cleared space on my utilitarian laptop with Windows XP and loaded it there and so far it works.  Looks awful but my imagination will have to fill in the blanks.

Oblivion

This is my all time favorite game.  It freezes the computer at dialogue boxes galore and forces a reboot.  Also looked at tips here and finally got it to work a bit playing as admin.  I saved the game every inch and got further in the sewers than in numerous previous attempts.  Finally had to give up for the day.   Posts online say the Steam version also freezes.  Doh.

Skyrim

I have played little of Skyrim and for some reason just did not care for it.  Still, it feeds the Elder Scrolls beast does it not.

Annoyingly to me, I had to log into Steam and update Steam and verify my address and account blah blah blah before I could play.  This, padawan, is why I just want my other games to work, so it is just me and my game world, no intrusion or demand for proof of anything before I immerse myself in the character and the world.

Defiantly I just struck out with my character across the landscape.  I wanted to use a long sword and some magic (which I haven’t used much in the past).  I dispatched some bandits at one location and found a nice cache of treasures in their little tower.  Then I moved on and came to a temple whose name I can’t recall.  Bandito city but my fireballs and sword proved too much for them.  Scum puppies.

I don’t care for Skyrim’s bleak snowy landscapes, but inside the chambers of a tomb or temple it is pure Elder Scrolls so I’ll get my fix here after all, and hope that Morrowind continues to function on my laptop.  I will find a way to get Oblivion going, I WILL.

Last note:  I created a Breton in Morrowind and Oblivion with the same name and somewhat the same skillset to try out a true magic character for the first time (usually I go Warrior).  If I can get them working it will be fun to explore the new class/race combo.
