Wildstar, Exit Stage Right

It’s a sad day when any online world closes down.  People’s lives change, adventures end, dreams for the future are done.

I’ve always loved the world and the gameplay but I couldn’t play this one one due to motion sickness.   I could never play for long.   Weirdly, as I’ve been playing recently, this wasn’t happening.

Here it was, a science fictional world, just what I’d really like to play, and I couldn’t play.

Watching the world chat recently, (I’m not sure what it’s called here)  I’ve been really taken by the community, and how generous they were answering questions and helping people out.

Someone was asking last night where everyone was going to go, what other game the community might be part of together.  That says a lot about a game, and the care that has been taken by it’s creators to make a world where everyone wants to live.

Here’s what I had to say about Wildstar in the past:

On the plus side the ship quests went much faster this time and I’m out in the world happily exploring every single inch of the game at my own pace.

Combat feels a bit different live.  I really need a new keyboard.  I have pounded the beezus out of my current one.

One of my favorite newer games that I didn’t get enough chance to play at length was Wildstar.  It is a science-fictional universe, populated by cartoon characters on something wild.  They SPROING through the world.
Dark Wing Duck gone insane.  Must clear hard drive space by fall…

I downloaded Wildstar and will be playing my Medic.  It took me a few minutes to get reoriented to the game, but I’m glad to be back, giving it another try.  Such a great looking, dare I say, happy game.

I never got a real chance to play Wildstar at release, and I’m pretty happy to be able to start again and give the game a proper play through.   For a variety of reasons I couldn’t play during opening week.  Even getting in this week, the place is crowded and it’s a battle to interact with npcs and kill mobs without one or more people bouncing in from out of nowhere to get it before you do.

I’ve made one of each character class and am actually excited to play the Rogue-like Stalker.  Since my level 95 Wow Rogue is my favorite character in that game these days, I’m willing to give stealth classes a chance.

When you enter stealth she pulls out incredibly long Wolverine like claws and away you go.  I’m pleased to see her stealth isn’t easily broken, so she can move ghost-like through the world.  While I’d like to rotate between all of my characters, she is a favorite and will probably get the most play time for a bit.

Random things I like:

The music is so vigorous and uplifting. Energizing!

The Announcer with his “Double Kill!” makes you feel like you’ve scored big.

Lots of achievements, including lore bits to find and exploration of the map.

Paths…I took explorer with an earlier character and really liked it, took Settler with Stalker and am not so enchanted with it so far.

I love that you get so many opportunities to jump and double jump and practically fly in so many places.  It is a joyous thing.

Screenshot Saturday Games This Week

I’ve been working on my screenshots, trying for some combat shots, and taking character pictures with them facing the camera, instead of always just seeing the back of them.

World of Warcraft

Ummm…they made my Rogue look scared all the time so she could look like this in a fight.

My Mage and her snake buddies.

I personally love the Azerite interface, it’s like playing a little mini-game.

I love this guy, now that’s a man of the sea.

Darkmoon Fair is so messed up.  I’m going to pass it by until they fix it.  My Jeweler got the Jewelry, Cooking and Fishing quests, but did not get the 5 point skill up, nor did she get the quest xp.   Most of my characters see no quests here (the high levels) at all, except for the boatload of Darkmoon quests you get in a dungeon.  No xp for those either.

No Angels of Death for the Horde.  The guy mocks your death.

My Death Knight in Ratchet on her way to her first Legion Class Quest.

Horde Taxi Service is cool, though

My Paladin in Boralus

A Vulpera.  I want one badly.

My Mage takes a selfie in Freehold.

Wildstar

Mery tries to get to level 14 so she can drop the Red Rocket house, but eek, game shut down is announced.

Elder Scrolls Online

I’ve been logging in every day hoping to get the 100k at months end for a house.  While leaving Vivec, I notice a paper flapping in the wind offering an apartment in the city.  Hmmm, another closet for me?   The building certainly is nice.

It is actually pretty, and larger than my other place.  It needs lights!

I can imagine it looking more like this.

Or My Dream Home from another loading screen.

Meanwhile,  I’m out adventuring when I log in each night.  I try to do one quest at least, and am trying to clear older ones first.   Way over to the east was this puzzle.

I have a pokey horse, but like the Siltstriders.  Seriously, the horse walks like a cow.

I dunno, this guy seems a bit like a vigilante.  But I said I’d help.

I can’t get my helmet off.  Driving me buggy.  I’ve always had it off before.  None of the tips work.

So I can wear this mohawk thing.

Or this new helmet with better stats, but yikes!  I feel like my character can’t breathe in there, eek.  Send heeelp.

Wildstar’s Free 50 Frenzy

Wildstar is offering a limited time level 50 character beginning “after the November 1st update”.   I don’t usually appreciate level boosts because I haven’t any idea how to play the character.  In this case, having that character will give me housing access.

I’m such a fool, I saw this notification on Facebook, but didn’t take the time to read the dates, then logged in and created a new character, but it’s too early and no boost.

It was my last character slot, and I really liked the new character’s looks and name, so I’ll need to kill off someone else to get the boost.  Alas, for some poor doomed alt.  Isn’t she so sweet?

All the details here.

On A Rainy Evening

No sun, no problem.

Star Wars Galaxies

I made a factory run of Walls with my Architect, promptly using them up on Cities and Guild Halls.

That twitch to shoot something brought out my halfway there Pistoleer.  She would also like to be a Bounty Hunter, but I’m missing just a single box to complete Marksman, Rifles 4.  Oh how painful to try to get that last box.  Using an SG-82 rifle which looks like a bent pipe.  zzzzzz

I sent my TK out briefly for some easy peasy Bol hunting on Dantooine, but her second mission had her chased by a Huurton who had been chomping my bols.  There were also two groups of Grauls right nearby.  It was never going to end well.

Lord of The Rings Online

More progress in Lothlorien.  Bizarrely a quest sent me back into Moria to help Bosi.  No one can resist a dwarf.   My Yellow Vision is improving.  Things didn’t look so bad tonight.

Wildstar

I downloaded Wildstar and will be playing my Medic.  It took me a few minutes to get reoriented to the game, but I’m glad to be back, giving it another try.  Such a great looking, dare I say, happy game.

Secret World

It’s official Secret World Day so into the Innsmouth Academy instance I went.   I immediately hit the wrong icon on the door because I was positioned oddly when I selected it.  All downhill from there.   It has been a while since I played and I know I didn’t get the codes right in earlier puzzles right off.  They must have let me re-start somehow.  This door isn’t.  I tried looking up how to re-set door puzzles in a variety of different ways.  Nada.

Tried going out of the instance and back in.  Out of the game and back in.  Plink!  Somehow I’m getting in there.

Wildstar Free to Play This Fall!

One of my favorite newer games that I didn’t get enough chance to play at length was Wildstar.  It is a science-fictional universe, populated by cartoon characters on something wild.  They SPROING through the world.
Dark Wing Duck gone insane.  Must clear hard drive space by fall…

Written by Team WildStar on May 28, 2015

This fall will be an exciting time for WildStar as we transition to Free-to-Play.
Since launch we’ve listened to all of your feedback and worked hard to improve your game experience. Part of that goal has always been to bring more players in to experience WildStar, and that’s what Free-to-Play is all about. Below you will find the valuable information you need to continue to enjoy your time on Nexus. And if you’re new to WildStar, this is a great place to start your adventure.

If you don’t see your question answered below, be sure to check out our detailed Knowledge Base article or post your question in the forums.

What does “Free-to-Play” mean?
“Free-to-Play” means that anyone can download the game and play without spending any money to buy WildStar or committing to a required subscription fee.
Is the game really free?
Players can acquire the game, create an account, login and play through everything the game has to offer without spending any money, so yes, we do mean free.
That said, we will also offer completely optional in-game purchases that cover a wide range of player services, convenience options, and cosmetic offerings.

What will happen to my account if I have an active subscription or game time applied to my account through C.R.E.D.D., or a Game Time Card when WildStar goes Free-to-Play?

All accounts that have an active recurring payment method, C.R.E.D.D. redemption, or GTC (Game Time Card) redemption when the transition occurs will be considered active. These accounts will automatically convert to Signature service, which will persist until their current “active period” ends.
For example, if an account has 20 days of time remaining through one of the methods above, those 20 days will convert to Signature service since game access is now open to everyone.
Players with a recurring payment plan for subscription service will have that plan automatically converted into a recurring plan for Signature status.
Players with non-recurring payments, C.R.E.D.D., or GTC will need to apply another payment to their account to continue using Signature service should they choose to continue with Signature service.
Active accounts will receive an amount of Loyalty Points based on:

  • The type of game box (Standard/Deluxe) added to the account.
  • The number of months subscribed through recurring payment, C.R.E.D.D. or Game Time Cards prior to F2P Launch

Additionally, as a reward to those who were continuous subscribers from WildStar’s launch until the transition to Free-to-Play, we are giving away an exclusive Ikthian Crawler mount, an exclusive DJ Caretaker housing décor item, a Disco Snoglug companion pet, a new housing music track, four months of Signature service, and two new titles: “Living Legend” and “Nexus Loyalist” – these bonuses will be granted to such players on the first day of transition.

If you missed out on launch but you’re a current subscriber and maintain your subscription through transition to Free-to-Play, you will still receive the DJ Caretaker housing décor item, the Disco Snoglug companion pet, the new housing music track, four months of Signature service, and the “Nexus Loyalist” title.

If I have an inactive account when the game goes Free-to-Play and I return to the game, what should I expect for my account?

All existing accounts that do not have an active recurring payment method, C.R.E.D.D. redemption, or GTC (Game Time Card) redemption when the transition occurs will be considered inactive. These accounts will automatically convert to Free service, which will persist until the account holder chooses to sign-up for Signature service.

Active and inactive account holders will automatically have access to the game and can play again just as soon as it is downloaded and patched. Additionally, these accounts will receive some grandfathered benefits only available to box-purchasers, which will ensure that these accounts retain an experience that most closely matches that of the launch game. These benefits include:

Item Free Players Box Purchasers
Character Slots
2
12
Costume Slots
4
6
Personal Bank
2 Slots
5 Slots
Decor 1000 total decor items placed 2000 total decor items placed

Like active accounts, pre-existing inactive accounts will receive an amount of Loyalty Points based on:

  • the type (Standard/Deluxe) of the box
  • the number of months subscribed through recurring payment, C.R.E.D.D. or Game Time Cards prior to F2P launch

If you purchased WildStar but let your account lapse, we want you to come back and get these grandfathered box-purchaser benefits! Players who subscribe by June 15, 2015 and maintain a subscription through transition to Free-to-Play, you will still receive the DJ Caretaker housing décor item, the Disco Snoglug companion pet, the new housing music track, four months of Signature service, and the “Nexus Loyalist” title.
What are Loyalty Points?
All WildStar players will be part of our new Loyalty Program where they will accumulate Loyalty Points and achieve Loyalty Ranks to earn special items and perks. In fact, if you’ve ever subscribed you have already earned some! We’ll reveal more details on the Loyalty Program in the near future.

How much of the game is accessible to Free players?
We place no restrictions on any of the game’s content. Every zone, every dungeon, every raid, every battleground… they’re all available. All players will be able to create characters of every race, class, and path while choosing any tradeskills they like. Characters can achieve level 50 and path level 30, just as they can under the current system. There are some restrictions on services and social functions, however, as noted in the table below.
What access will Free players have to future game content?
All updates will be available to both Free and Signature players. However, we do plan to include optional purchases with all new content. We may also offer some new content and full expansion packs exclusively for purchase in the future.
What types of accounts will be offered when the game goes Free-to-Play?
There will two main types of account when the game transitions to Free-to-Play:
Free accounts get full access to the game. There is no recurring payment of any kind required.
Signature accounts get everything provided by the Free service, along with the unique bonuses and benefits detailed below. Signature accounts require a payment plan offered in 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month increments including C.R.E.D.D., Game Time Card, or recurring payments.

Wildstar Characters and Paths

I hadn’t played for a bit but I made some progress this week.  I now have a Spellslinger/Explorer, a Warrior/Settler and a Medic/Scientist.

There is an Esper too that I found to be not so effective, but it is likely I’m playing it like a melee class and jumping when I should stand still so I’ll give her another try.

I am surprised that I like the Medic best at this point, whaling her along to a lofty level 8.  I like the Scientist path too, though I don’t see myself being a huge “Lore” person.

My completionist ways are fed by finding all the scrolls and datacubes in each area.  I was unable to do this in the Northern Wilds because the second door in the Ecolab would not open, as all three consoles would not light up at once.  I actually have another Scientist on a second server and it popped right open for her so grr I say.

Figure A only two consoles will light up:

Sent a Bug Report.  Thank you Wildstar, by the way, for a nice Bug Report form.

I like the Northern Wilds area and beyond that your character can go to much more than the Evensong Forest area which is all touchy feely and ack.

My plan is to make one of each class as I like to do to really see what the game offers.

I am eager to get a house but I’m not sure where I want to make my home.  I guess since I have to be level 14 for that no hurry.  I am saving little things I find in the world for my home and garden but am running out of bag space. I hope I find a town with a bank soon.

Wildstar

I “pre-ordered” Wildstar at the last possible second to get the Rocket House.  It seems to show up in one of my menus as a Piglet House????  Say what?  I cannot apparently do anything with it till level 14.  Bogus.  Little characters like a place they can call home right away.

I think my girl’s hair is a darker shade of pink than I had in open beta.  Very distracting.  Apparently there is currently no “barber shop” where I can lighten it.

On the plus side the ship quests went much faster this time and I’m out in the world happily exploring every single inch of the game at my own pace.

Combat feels a bit different live.  I really need a new keyboard.  I have pounded the beezus out of my current one. (Went out and got one, np.)

If I can get my virtual act together I will post a Wildstar Wednesday update.

Ooohhhh too exciting.

Wild Star Beta Report: Thumbs Up!

The Open Beta continues through tomorrow.  I do not think I’ll get much play time in so here are my thoughts:

Playing this morning I wished I had more time to play.  More time with my character and the world.  I’d like to get just a bit farther, see a bit more.

The game is so very smooth, “polished” as they say.  For a game I paid no attention to before this open beta opportunity, I really like it and am likely to play at launch.

As I’ve been thinking about what I like, the exploration is a lot of fun.  I do like the Explorer Path. It reminds me of the old Tomb Raider games where you’d get into a new section of the tomb and you could see where you needed to go, but dang, how on earth were you going to get there?

I like the combat, though I’m not a fan of those red fans of stun/knockdown the enemy drop on the ground in front of you.  Neverwinter is the other that does that, right?  What I’m doing is hitting them as fast as I can with my own shots then as they lay down the red stuff I use my ability which slams/stuns them and moves me out of range behind them.  It works nicely with single targets and has some utility with multiple.  When in doubt, JUMP.

Looking at Zone chat this morning things were pretty mellow.  I’m seeing people asking how things work, asking advice on builds, armor and skills.   This bodes very well.

Often it seems people are in the chats slamming the game, comparing it to other games, just being nothing but critical as Trolls do like to do.

Saying goodbye to my girl for now, I’ll bring her back in June 🙂    Happy testing!

WildStar a peek at the Dominion

I really didn’t have a chance to play this weekend.  I like my Aurin so much and would really just like to play her until she reaches one of those invisible walls where it becomes harder, less pleasant to advance.  Every character has them, which is one reason for having multiple characters, areas, quests and play styles available to you.

You don’t want to kill the character off, but you need a break.

I thought I should at least try a Dominion character.  They definitely are The Bad Guys as far as I can see.   The Mechari seemed most pleasing so I created a pretty cool looking character.

I don’t suppose you can see very well the cool pokey things protruding from the sides of her head like Pippi Longstocking antennae.

Her earliest tasks included sort of torturing some citizens who weren’t thinking correctly. Bad guy City.

The Fearless Robot Leader spoke in a breathy voice that was more icky than menacing.

There was low, Jazzy music playing.  I hate Jazz.

These things added up pretty quickly to a character I didn’t wish to play.

With so little time left in Open Beta  I think I need to get my Pink Pony Tailed Aurin  as far along as I can so I get a real feel for the game.

I’d like to see as much as the game has to offer, and I’m curious about housing, character development and whether there really is open world pvp, which would be a game breaker to say the least.

Before the open beta I did not look at anything about the game at all, I only saw the trailers which looked frenetic and unappealing.

I’m not finding the game to be frenetic at all.  The “cartoon” style which may be putting some people off doesn’t feel that way in game.  I have had no graphic or audio issues though I could see in Zone Chat many people were having them.

The only other bizarro thing I would comment on is that apparently you only get more bag space a slot at a time and by leveling.  You can’t give your low level character reasonable bags to adventure with, they won’t be able to equip them.  In a subscription game that is beyond unacceptable, especially if you work on crafting.
